With ten years of volunteer work for the Nevada Department of Wildlife fisheries on the Third Creek study project we have developed and honed our understanding of Third Creek and its watershed. We have hiked its five tributaries to their source springs and drank from two of them. Five tributaries, East to West: Seven Springs Meadow fork (old Incline Lake); East Fork, its highest source spring is at about elevation 9400; Ginny Lake fork; Jennifer fork; and Rosewood Creek fork.
The Third Creek study project is in its 11th year, and 2024 was the first year in around 80 that Third Creek saw the only NATIVE Lake Tahoe trout, the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, return to her banks. We are particularly focused on assisting this return of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout to Third Creek.
Three creeks: Third Creek, Incline Creek, and Wood Creek, are vital to the North Shore of Lake Tahoe and the ecological balance of Lake Tahoe.
We watch government entities that may threaten or ignore Third Creek. We are about to begin fundraising for a semi-permanent weir and equipment to enhance permanent solutions nurturing the LCT's habitat.
Our community is full of people who want to help and we partner with Lake Tahoe conservation groups, non-profits, and government agencies to dovetail the efforts of all.
